Global Impact Fellows With Unite for Sight
We just returned from Bihar India with a group called Unite for Sight to volunteer at the AB Eye Institute in March 2010. Unite for Sight is a non-profit organization that aims to prevent blindness by applying best practices for health care. This program works with local ophthalmologists and optometrists to provide eye exams, eye surgery, and outreach to poverty stricken communities in developing countries like Ghana, India, and Honduras. While abroad, we screened patients for cataracts, glaucoma, and other eye diseases. We participated in sight restoring cataract surgeries. Thanks to the support of SO many people, we have raised more than $3200 to support 64 cataract surgeries! This blog is meant to keep all those who have contributed to this effort informed and help them see where their donations are going.

Another milestone!

We are not going to lie, it has been an exhausting week already and it is only Wednesday! There are definitely a lot of hoops to jump through to get a research project approved. Brayden has been working with his adviser Dr. Nick Galli on getting a proposal written but before submission to the IRB can be completed, training must be completed through CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) to ensure that the proper precautions are taken and considered when conducting a research project. Training covered history about the Nuremberg Trials, the Declaration of Helsinki, the "Common Rule", and the Belmont Report, to name a few. Training in HIPPA regulations and expectations and logistics concerning the IRB (Institutional Review Board) and research submission. All this to ensure that ethical research and protection of human rights is maintained.

Along with this and a new semester, we are moving from Bountiful to North Salt Lake. Reasons include rent hike, and poor management. We are sad to leave our first home together, but we are making a smart move for the future. We have been in touch with EVERYONE trying to get addresses changed at banks, insurance taken care of, rental agreements signed, utilities set up and changed. Lot's of things to get done everyday, but surprisingly it gives a good feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day when the head hits the pillow.

I guess the real reason for writing about the current busyness is to articulate the huge blessing that we received this morning! To our total surprise,  Jennifer Staple Clark (CEO of Unite for Sight) sent us an email concerning a recent donation by a company of 1000 reading glasses. To date, we have collected and sorted around 300 with the help of the Lions Club and were awaiting 400 pair from Friends for Sight. This was a welcome blessing and weight off our shoulders when we woke up! We accepted the generous donation and will be taking 1300 paris of glasses with us to India in March! Wow! We still have tons of boxes of glasses that we have not even touched yet and the number of glasses will probably go up!

We are so grateful to everyone who has helped us get to where we are! We could not do half of the things we have accomplished without your support. Thank you!
