Global Impact Fellows With Unite for Sight
We just returned from Bihar India with a group called Unite for Sight to volunteer at the AB Eye Institute in March 2010. Unite for Sight is a non-profit organization that aims to prevent blindness by applying best practices for health care. This program works with local ophthalmologists and optometrists to provide eye exams, eye surgery, and outreach to poverty stricken communities in developing countries like Ghana, India, and Honduras. While abroad, we screened patients for cataracts, glaucoma, and other eye diseases. We participated in sight restoring cataract surgeries. Thanks to the support of SO many people, we have raised more than $3200 to support 64 cataract surgeries! This blog is meant to keep all those who have contributed to this effort informed and help them see where their donations are going.

Research update

Brayden has been working on his IRB submission all week for a board review deadline of January 25, 2010. Today he finished his rough draft and it has already been critiqued by Dr. Nick. Now the survey must be finalized and the final draft of the proposal must be finished for submission or the next available review date is February 1st.

As far as moving goes, we are about 3/4 the way there. The idea of a slow move over a 15 day period sounded very UN-stressful when we were in the planning stages, but in reality we are VERY READY TO BE DONE! The big hold up for finally making the move to living in the new apartment is the internet. It's amazing how much one needs to rely on the internet to get anything done now days. The internet will not be fully operational until Wednesday at 5:00 pm. We hope to be all settled down tomorrow night in North Salt Lake. Farewell Bountiful. It's kind of nostalgic, we are leaving the first place we lived together after our wedding almost 2 years ago (2/15/07)! This move is getting us one step closer to our BIG move out of state for Optometry school (or Medical school-Brayden is still deciding. He will take the OAT and the MCAT this summer).

Last Sunday, Brayden's family came over to help finish cleaning and sorting the last 300 pairs of glasses. We were rolling on the floor with laughter at Brayden's brother Ladd who kept modeling giant pairs of glasses with coke-bottle lenses! You had to be there! It has been fun having family help out with the sorting process. It is fun to teach them about cataract surgery and the need for reading glasses and sunglasses. You'll never believe it, but we have surpassed our goal of 1000 pairs of glasses! We will be taking more than 1600 pairs of glasses with us in a suitcase to India in March! Thanks again to an anonymous company who provided 1000 pairs, New Eyes for the Needy who provided 400 pairs, and The Lions Club who provided the rest! We could never have done this without you!

No new news on the fundraising front. We are still standing at 34 sight restoring cataract surgeries. Thank you again to everyone who has donated and spread the word! We are a little bit more than half way there.
